There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old rifle and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild 'Tom' turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining. A voice spoke to him and said, 'Pray first, aim high and stay focused. However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice said again to him, 'I said 'Pray, Aim high and Stay focused.'So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree and shot the wild turkey. The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun and hit the snake in the head and killed it. And, when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer and a turkey to eat for his family. The snake (Satan) was dead simply because the man listened to God.
Moral of the story:Pray first before you do anything, aim and shoot high in your goals, and stay focused on God. Never let others discourage you concerning your past. The past is exactly that, 'the past.' Live every day one day at a time and remember that only God knows our future and that he will not put you through any more than you can bear.Do not look to man for your blessings, but look to the doors that only He has prepared in advance for you in your favor.Wait, be still and patient: keep God first and everything else will follow.

Wisdom
The Bible tells us to ask for wisdom. Proverbs 4:5 tells us to "Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them." Proverbs 4:7 tells us "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost you all you have, get understanding." We should all pray for wisdom. But I pray that we are seeking to have Godly wisdom over worldly wisdom. What is worldly wisdom? James tells us that worldly wisdom is James 3:14-16 - "But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice." Godly wisdom is James 3:17-18 "But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness." If we think about it, there is never a time when it isn't good for us to have more wisdom. We all need it, and no one ever reaches a point when he/she has enough. How much wiser do you think you would be if you prayed for wisdom every day?
The POWER of the TONGUE
James 3 deals with the power of the tongue. The tongue is a small member of our body but can be very powerful. We all sin (Romans 3:23). Some really struggle with their speech. Even members of the church struggle with it. Satan just loves for us to misuse our speech. There are many negative ways that we can use our speech. One of the ways we struggle with our speech is lying. One of the things that God hates is a lying tongue (Proverbs 6:16-19). In the grand scheme of things, we may think lying is no big deal, but to God it is a BIG deal. So, we can see we should be telling the truth at all times. Another way is cursing. Many times we will say words that should not pass our teeth. The Bible says that with our mouths we bless God and curse our fellow man who is made in the image of God (James 3:10). Young and old, let's not use profanity. Another negative way is gossip. A friend of mine defined gossip as garbage outspoken to shame innocent people. Gossip is everywhere and it is even in the church. I pray that we work on not gossiping. Remember the speech test before passing on a story: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it helpful? Think before we speak. Bud said that laughing is another negative way we use our speech. Sometimes we laugh at the expense of others. That is not becoming of a child of God. We need to learn to use our speech for good, for encouraging others and for building up the body of Christ and others that do not know the Lord. The tongue is powerful and folks we all carry around this powerful weapon. Let's ask for God to help us use it wisely and with caution.
Faith—Dead or Alive
In James 2, James talks about having a living faith and a dead faith. James 2:17 tells us that faith without works is dead. Basically, he is telling us that a dead faith will not save us. You know we all have faith in something. Christians have faith in God, children have faith in their parents. For ex. when we board a plane, we have faith in the pilot. When we go to the dentist, we have faith in him. If a pilot tells us to buckle our seat belts, we do it. If a dentist tells us not to eat for thirty minutes after a visit, we follow those instructions. Would if we told the pilot that we trust him but don't get on the plane. Is that trust? What about saying to a dentist that you have faith in his wisdom but decide to disregard his instructions to brush daily. Is that faith? If we do not follow up on action, our faith is not worth much. Dead faith is a faith that understands but does not act. That faith is worthless. That is like saying to your doctor that you know he can restore your health but refusing to take the treatments. Hebrews 11 is the Hall of Fame chapter of Faith. By faith each individual did something. By faith, Noah built and ark. By faith Moses left Egypt. Each individual not only believed in God but did something to prove that belief. Faith cannot exist without works! James gives us the example of Abraham and Rahab and how they were both justified by their works. Our faith is not complete until we prove it with our works. God created us to do good works (Ephesians 2:8-10). God gave us the greatest gift of all in Jesus. We can never repay Him for all that He has done for us. All we can do is respond to that gift with gratitude with our works and serve the Lord.
Favoritism
The Youth Group is studying the book of James on Sunday mornings. Last week, we were in James 2. James tells us that we are not to show favoritism towards people or that we are to be a respecter of persons. This is what James says: 1 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (James 2:1-4). Here is basically what James tells us: The Christians have assembled for worship; and suddenly there walks in this distinguished looking man with a gold ring and clearly expensive clothes. He creates quite a stir. Someone, one of the ushers perhaps, bows him into a good place; and then, when a working man, still wearing his work clothes, comes in, he is told to sit on the floor or stand! Such conduct, either then or now, is shameful. I believe that James is telling us that we are all equal in Christ. We are all sinners (Romans 3:23) and we are all in need of God’s grace. Galatians 3:27 tells us that we are all one in Christ Jesus. We are not better than one another. We all have the same need and that is Jesus Christ. Let’s not think we are better than others based on wealth, status, family, etc. God loves you; I love you, and let’s go to heaven together!
Lay Aside
James 1:21 - "Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you." When one becomes a child of God you still will battle against sin. James says that we need to get rid of it and replace junk with God’s Word. The Christian must lay aside some things. On a diet, you lay aside junk food. Take for example the removal of clothing or of a snake shedding his skin. When those things happen, you leave it behind. If you struggled with drinking before becoming a Christian, you now lay it aside. If you struggle with drugs, sex, anger, jealous, etc. you lay it aside and put on God’s ways. Christians are to lay aside all filthiness. The Greek word translated filthiness "riparian" comes from the word "rupos." When used in a medical context, this word means wax in the ear. James is telling his readers to get rid of everything which would stop their ears to the Word of God. The Christian is to remove every form of filthiness as one would remove soiled garments. Why do we get rid of filthiness? We want to be pleasing to God!!! James calls for nothing else than a complete departure from sin. Christians must use God’s Word to fill their lives up with His word after we have gotten rid of the junk in our lives. Then we come to the theme passage of the book of James 1:22. "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." James tells us that we need to listen to the Word but also do what it says. Don’t let the Word go in one ear and go out the other. The word tells us to love one another, we love one another. The Word tells us to be baptized, be baptized. The Bible tells us to stop sinful ways, then stop it and please God. Christians need to be doers of the Word. God’s Word must be obeyed.
Stay Strong
I know that as teenagers and adults that we face many challenges to our faith. Last week, in the teenage class, we began the study of the book of James. James is the most practical book in the New Testament. James deals with many day to day issues that we face. In the first chapter, he deals with trials and temptations. Trials are outward circumstances and Temptations are inward struggles that we have. Satan is going to constantly tempt us. He will try to draw us away. Satan tries to draw us away and entice us like a fisherman does to fish. I personally believe that temptations are DISTRACTIONS. Satan tries to distract us from being what God wants us to be. God calls us to be pure; Satan throws things at us that are impure. He is always trying to bring us down. It reminds me of an ESPN commercial I recently came across. This man was waiting outside the elevator and when he went in there was a Devil mascot inside the elevator. The man asked the mascot if he was going up and the Devil was shaking his head no, meaning he was going down. That commercial made me think how the Devil wants to bring us down and he will do whatever he can to bring us down. That is why we must be strong and put our faith and trust in God and we can resist the TEMPTATIONS or DISTRACTIONS that come our way. James 4:7 — “Submit to God, resist the Devil and he will flee from you.”

10 Guidelines For The Christian
In your relationship to . . .
GOD: Be prayerful. Remember dependence and helplessness in your relationship with God is fundamental for spiritual health. How about spiritual check-ups this year (2 Corinthians 13:5)?
OTHERS: Be helpful. Make a commitment to show love and encouragement to someone everyday. Challenge yourself to be kind and helpful (Ephesians 4:32)!
YOUR MIND: Read and think about something good and creative every day (Philippians 4:8). Start the day with the Bible. Let the words of life fill your heart and mind before anything else gets to them!
FEELINGS: Express them with love and honesty. Whether fear, guilt, grief, rage, shame, or anxiety, express your feelings to God, self, and a trusted friend (Proverbs 27:5; 1 Peter 3:7).
ACTIONS: Be generous. Give to others (2 Corinthians 9:7). Give freely of your love, time, money, spirit, creativity, encouragement, and praise.
SUCCESSES: Be thankful (Colossians 3:15). Most if not all of our successes are the result of God’s grace. Count your blessings regularly.
TROUBLES: Be trustful. God has chosen to make us mature through trials and hardships (Hebrews 12:6-10). Look for and trust His guidance in the highs and lows of life.
HEART: Be careful (Proverbs 23:7). Focus on God. Be careful what you allow to creep in your heart.
WORSHIP: Be still (Psalm 46:10). Expressing your love and adoration to God isn’t for Sunday’s only. Don’t get too busy throughout the week to make continual offerings of praise to God. Jesus is Lord of every day!
SIN: Be repentant. Don’t let any sin harden your heart or break the connection between you and God. Confess your sins to the Father every day (1 John. 1:6-10). Claim His promises that forgive you and make you pure and clean by the Blood of Jesus!
Have a great New Year!!!

Let It Spring Up!
There was an elderly woman who did not have much in the way of the world's goods, but was very rich in enthusiasm towards God. Though she was a member of a very quiet congregation, she often burst out with an loud "Hallelujah!" The leadership did not like when she did that. Finally the elders approached her and said if she would not disturb the peace of the church service with her spontaneity, they would give here two large, warm blankets. She was desperately in need of the extra blankets and therefore agreed. The next Sunday morning, after hearing another glorious Bible truth, she just could not contain herself. Out came a loud "Hallelujah!" as she noticed two elders sitting close by give her a stern look. She remained quiet for a few minutes until another wonderful truth gripped her heart, but she caught herself before the praise escaped her lips. However, several minutes later, when the preacher stated another truth that thrilled her deep within, she broke forth with, "Blankets or no blankets, praise the Lord, Hallelujah!"
"Enthusiasm" comes from two Greek words: "en" and "theos" which brings the focus of the word to be "in God" or "God in." That ought to be a source of great enthusiasm. When we realize all that God has done and is doing for us praise should naturally spring up in our lives and from our lips. Just like we laugh when we hear something funny, so praise should be a natural response for what God has done for us!
"For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations" (Isaiah 61:11).
"I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth" (Psalm 34:1). Let praise spring forth from day to day!

Give Thanks Every Day!!!
There was a coal miner who had become well known for his bad language. But when he became a Christian, he was very determined to put bad language behind him. His fellow workers knew he became a Christian but they questioned his sincerity, so they tried to test him by stealing his lunch. As they all awaited his angry response, including plenty of bad words, they were surprised when he said, "Praise the Lord! I’ve still got my appetite. They can’t take that away!"
We just celebrated "Thanksgiving Day." Thanksgiving was a great time with family and friends. It was a day that we celebrate and a day to give thanks. Some people do not have much to be thankful for. The situation of others differs around the world. Our own situation may differ from year to year and situation to situation. But there should always be a focus of Thanksgiving for all the blessings that we have. This is what Paul said way back in the way backs ...
"(16) Rejoice always, (17) pray without ceasing, (18) Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Give thanks always!!! This is the spirit of thankfulness we should have. We should always be thankful for all that we have. God wants us to be thankful. The truth is we may lose some things. We may not get all that we want. We may even have things taken away from us. But we should praise God for the things that nobody can take from us. God’s children should be filled with thankfulness for all that we have through Jesus Christ. God can help fill us with a thankful attitude in all situations. Paul also said this way back when:
"(17) And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:17) Let us thank God for all that we have. Let’s be thankful every day not just one day a year. every day not just one day a year. Have a great day of Thanksgiving!

Put Your Hand In The Hand Of The Man
Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, the official shopping season is in full swing. Which leads me to another thought: Children in department stores! What a disaster waiting to happen! How many places can a child hide in a department store? How many things to see and places to go? If you are not in some way touching your child, they can be gone or lost in a heartbeat. Most of what I see is a parent holding on to their child’s hand. One, to keep them near by so as not to get lost and two, to guide them around the store because the little ones have no idea where they are going or what they are doing. We as parents can see things they can’t (over racks and through departments to the next). We as parents know where to go to get what we need and how to get there without getting lost (some times we do anyway). But the child is just too little to see what we can and too mesmerized by everything to keep their minds on the task at hand. So, we make sure we are holding their hands to guide them safely through the experience.
God, as our Father, sees things we cannot and He understands things that we cannot comprehend. We are in the middle of a huge department store called the world and there are so many things to see and do and be involved in that our little minds just can’t keep focused on the task at hand. We get sidetracked, mesmerized, and soon we have lost sight of our heavenly parent. Just as it is important to hold on to our children when we go out, it is even more important for us to hold on to God when we go out into the world. How else are we going to be led safely through the obstacles, temptations and road blocks to our home. As one song says "Put your hand in the hand of the man that stilled the sea. Put your hand in the hand of the man that walked on the waters. Put your hand in the hand of the man of Galilee." We may be adults in the world’s view, but we are still children in God’s and we need Him to guide us every step of the way.

Are You Valuable to God?
We are very aware of our own imperfections, we are often made to wonder, as did the psalmist, "Who is man that you are mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:4). We sometimes wonder how God could possibly still love us after all our sins? Maybe the answer to that question can be best understood by way of illustration.
Suppose I offer you a crisp, new, $100 dollar bill, would you want it? Of course you would. But suppose I crumpled the money up in my fist. Would you still want it? That wouldn't change your mind, would it? Well, suppose I then threw the crumpled $100 dollar bill on the floor and ground it into the floor with my shoe. Would you still want it? Well, of course you would. You see, whether crumpled or crisp, clean or dirty, the $100 dollar bill retains its value.
Likewise, it matters not to God how dirty we get from wallowing in sin, God still sees our value and wants to possess us. Friends, don't ever sell yourself short. Do you feel guilty for all your sins? Good! You should. But don't let your sins cause you to think that God no longer wants you. You are his creation, his offspring.

Make My Life A Parable
Lord, make my life a parable. That’s what I want to be.My life, a story like the onesYou told by Galilee.Help me to show You in my life.Teach me to show the way.Let the lesson that I liveBe taught from day to day.Dear Lord, please keep me humbleSo that after this life’s end,Someone who’s seen me as I’ve walkedWill know I was Your friend.Yes, Lord, make me a parableAs living proof to allThat those who cling to Jesus ChristNeed never, ever fall.
When I Grow Up ...
A first grade teacher seated her students in a circle. She asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up. One by one, each child got up and announced, "I'd like to be a nurse like my mother," or "I want to be a banker like my father," or "I want to be a teacher like you, Miss Smith."
The last child to speak was the most shy and timid little boy in the class. He said, "When I get big, I'm going to be a lion tamer in the circus. I'm going to face those animals with my whip and chair and make them leap through hoops of fire and obey all of my commands."
Seeing the disbelieving looks on the faces of his classmates that he could ever act so boldly or bravely, he was quick to reassure them, "Well, of course, I'll have my mother with me."
We are sometimes shy and timid about standing up for Christ in the midst of an immoral society. We keep quiet when we ought to speak up. We cower when we ought to take a stand. Where do we get the inner strength to be bold and brave? Only through the assurance that we have Christ by our side.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Phil. 4:13).
With that knowledge, take courage today to do something for God that you've been hesitant to do.

Righteousness on the Inside
A certain woman bought two identical Whirlpool freezers. Her husband, a devoted deer hunter, had once again over supplied the family. Early in her marriage she had objected to his obsession. She had said something about "killing Bambi." But year after year, he would continue to bring home more deer meat than she knew what to do with, so she finally caved and bought the freezers for the garage. To avoid finding an extension cord, she plugged them into different electrical outlets in the garage, and filled both with the meat they’d picked up at the processors. Then off the family went for a two week vacation. What she didn't realize was that one of the garage outlets had no juice. Seems they’d never actually used it since they moved into the house. So one of the freezers acted as a freezer; the other was just a storage shed. In early January, they returned, the family hungry for deer steaks. She stood before the Whirlpool twins. They still looked just alike. Both were shiny and new. But, as she was about to find out, on the inside they were very different. Open one and smell it and it was fine! But open the other, take a whiff, and die right there! It’s full of rottenness and decay. Jesus said that the Pharisees were a lot like that freezer, looking just right on the outside, but rotten to the core on the inside. God wants us to have a pure and clean heart. Matthew 5:8 says, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." David prayed for God to give him a clean heart and a right spirit in him (Psalm 51:10). I hope your heart is right before God and not rotten to the core. As I close, ask yourself, "Do I have a heart condition?" If so, why not take it to the Master Physician?

Resist The Devil
An old preacher in Haiti once said this about the Devil. A certain man wanted to sell his house for two thousand dollars. Another man wanted to buy it very badly, but he was a poor man and didn’t have the full price. After much bargaining, the owner agreed to sell the house to the man for one thousand dollars. But the reduced price came with a stipulation. The owner would sell the house, but he would keep ownership of a large nail protruding from over the front door.
Several years later, the original owner decided he wanted to buy the house back. Understandably, the new owner was unwilling to sell. As a result, the original owner went out, found the carcass of a dead dog in the street, and hung it from the nail he still owned. Soon the house became unlivable, and the family was forced to sell to the owner of the nail.
The preacher concluded by saying, “If we leave the devil with even one small peg in our life, he will return to hang his rotting garbage on it.” You may own the entire home, but if you give the enemy access to just one nail in your life, it definitely puts you in the high risk basket. Satan is no play or pretend thing. He and his power are real and intended to harm. But rather than spending our time worrying about him, let's resist him when we are tempted and focus on Jesus. He's the one who won the big showdown at Calvary, triumphing over Satan. Now we can resist and Satan will flee (James 4:7). Let me ask you something; is there a nail over the front door of your life? Is there a nail that you have leased out to the enemy? If there is, you need to deed it over to Christ and you need to do that now.

The U in JesUs
Before U were thought of or time had begun, God stuck U in the name of His Son.
And each time U pray, you'll see it's true, You can't spell out JesUs and not include U.
You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name, For U, He was born; that's why He came.
And His great love for U is the reason He died. It even takes U to spell crUcified.
Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand He rose from the dead, with U in His plan.
The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew, and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.
When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension, He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.
"Go into the world and tell them it's true That I love them all - Just like I love U." o many great people are spelled with a U, Don't they have a right to know JesUs too?
It all depends now on what U will do, He'd like them to know,
But it all starts with U.

From the Heart
A desert wanderer found a crystal spring of unsurpassed freshness and decided to bring some to his king. Barely satisfying his own thirst, he filled a leather bottle and carried it many days beneath the desert sun to reach the palace. By that time the water had become stale due to the old container in which it was stored. But the king tasted it with expressions of gratitude and delight, and sent away the loyal heart filled with gladness. After he left, others sampled it and expressed their surprise at how bad it was. "Ah!" said he, "It was not the water I tasted, but the love that prompted the offering." What we bring to God is marked by multiplied imperfections, but He looks beyond that to our motives. We may think our singing voice is "stale and rank," but God listens with delight. Our prayers may not be filled with eloquence but God wants to hear what is on our hearts. Could our worship be better sounding, better looking? Perhaps! Yet God is primarily looking for the love that prompted the offering.

How Much is a Teenager Worth?
To some people, not very much.To the insurance company, he’s a bad risk!To a policemen, he’s a hot roddin’ kid with too much time and speed on his hands! To the city hall, he’s a future tax payer! To the school principal, he’s a spitball! To mom and dad, he’s a tax deduction, and he may either make or break the family!
BUT . . .To the Church, he’s a gauge of what the church in a few years will be like! He’s a weekly challenge and inspiration to have in the service! To the Sunday school, he’s a burden to pray for and to win to Christ! To the Lord Jesus Christ, he’s worth the whole world, for He gave Himself for the sins of every teenager!

Jesus, The Master Craftsman
A distinguished British violinist named Peter Cropper was such an outstanding musician that the Royal Academy of Music in London honored him by lending him a priceless 258 year old Stradivarius. It is the dream of every violinist to be able to play such an instrument, but a terrible thing happened while Cropper was performing in Finland. He tripped and fell on top of the Stradivarius and broke it. Cropper’s pleasant dream was turned into a horrible nightmare. He was inconsolable.
Then a London violin dealer told him of a master craftsman who could repair the Stradivarius. To make a long story short, the repairs were so perfect they could not even be seen, and the soaring notes of the instrument were more beautiful that they had ever been before—all because the broken parts were placed in the hands of a master craftsman who then applied his healing touch.
Yes, Jesus Christ is the one for whom we have been looking. Something terrible happens, sin enters, and our live are broken. Then we turn them over to Jesus Christ, who is the Master Craftsman of all time. He takes the broken pieces and puts them back together again, and we are better than new!
“Behold, I make all things new.” (Revelation 21:5)

That You May Believe
Today begins the Harding University Bible Lectureship. I will be in Searcy until Wednesday attending the lectureship program. The lesson today is on the Signs of Jesus. Jesus performed many sings. Signs are important words in the book of John. These words are used for the mighty works or miracles that Jesus did. A sign is much more than a miracle; it is a miracle that points people to the source of that miracle, God at work in His Son, Jesus. Here are the signs in the Gospel of John. Jesus turned water into wine (John 2). Jesus healed a nobleman's son (John 4). Jesus healed a lame man (John 5). Jesus fed 5,000 (John 6). Jesus walked on the sea (John 6). Jesus restored sight to a blind man (John 9). Jesus raised dead Lazarus (John 11). All seven of these are preparation for the last and greatest sign and that is the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. Do you know Him? Do you have life in His name? Why not give your life to Jesus TODAY? Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31).

No Time Today
I haven’t time today, dear Lord, tomorrow I’ll give to Thee.So many things, so much to do, today I must work for me.I know I promised this day, Lord, but something has changed my plans. The car needs washing, the yard’s a mess, and I need to see a man.
So sorry, dear Lord, had a call just now, some relatives in town you see,Tomorrow I’ll make it up to you, Tomorrow, I’ll give to thee. Tomorrow—it never seems to come,The work of the Lord is left undone. If troubles should come to us today,Suppose the Lord turned this face away.
He might ignore our earnest pleaWith words familiar in our ears could ring,“Today I’m so busy with other things,Tomorrow, dear one, I might listen to thee.”~ Frances Johnson ~

Happy Birthday!!
Today, October 12, 2008, Emery Kate Wilson turns the big ONE!!! Wow, time surely does go by real fast. It seems like just yesterday we got the news that Jamie was expecting, and that we were just bringing her home from the hospital; and now we are having a big birthday bash for her. God is so good and He has blessed Jamie and me with a beautiful little girl and she is so much fun. I like what James tells us in James 1:17: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. God has blessed us with a great gift in Emery. God has blessed all of us with the gift of children. My prayer is and I would ask you to pray for Emery and all the children here at Holden Avenue. Children are a heritage from the Lord as the Bible says in Psalm 127:3. Have a great day in the Lord and thank God for all the children!!!
Mistakes
“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my professional career and have lost over 300 games. Twenty-seven times my team trusted me to make the game-winning shot — and I missed.” “I have lost count of all the mistakes I’ve made on a basketball court.” Who made those statements? None other than the greatest basketball player who ever lived — Michael Jordan. Every body makes mistakes. Even Hannah Montana sings a song called Everybody Makes Mistakes. Even the Apostles made mistakes. Take Peter for example, he denied Jesus three times as Jesus said he would (Matthew 27:65). Yes Peter messed up, but Jesus gave him another chance and Peter went on to do great things in God’s Kingdom. We all have messed up and I have messed up royally. But I am not going to let anything keep me from being all that I can be in God’s service. You may have made some mistakes that you are not proud of. Why not turn those mistakes over to God and let Him forgive you and begin living the life that God wants you to live? God loves you, I love you; and let’s go to Heaven together!

One Solitary Life
Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.
He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself ...
While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.
Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.
I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.

Jesus Is...
The One who often wept (John 11:35), yet He dries our tears (Revelation 7:17; 21:4).
The One who was sold for the price of a common slave (Matthew 26:15), yet He redeemed man from his sins (1 Peter 1:18-19).
The One who was led as a lamb to the slaughter (Acts 8:32), yet He is our Good Shepherd (John 10:11).
The One who gave His life (Galatians 2:20), and by His dying made it possible for us to be saved (Mark 16:16).
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.” — Revelation 5:12

Children
Maybe you’ve heard the story about the school teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his snow boots. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots just didn't want to go on. Finally, after much struggling, she got both boots on only to hear the little boy say, "They're on the wrong feet."
She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on but she managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots on the right feet.
He then announced, "These aren't my boots." She bit her tongue rather than scream, "Why didn't you say so?" Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.
No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, "They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear 'em." Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. She mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again.
Helping him into his coat, she asked, "Now, where are your mittens?" He said, "I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots." - (Biblical Parenting)
(Psalm 127:3,5) – “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord… Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them…”

The Buzzard, The Bat & The Bee
If you put a buzzard in a pen six or eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of his ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten or twelve feet. Without space to run, as is his habit, he will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.
In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that if they look up, they’ll find the answer. “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will” (Psalm 5:3).

Anableps
Anableps are commonly called “four-eyed fish.” They have been uniquely created by God to see two images at once. Each eye has an upper and lower cornea and retina which enables the fish while swimming at the surface level to see and feed on insects while watching below for larger fish which would eat them.
Maturing in Christ also demands double vision. We must live with our eyes set upon heaven to not lose focus of our destination and to constantly learn of God’s way. At the same time we must live being aware of an enemy and “watch” for his destructive ways. How well are you doing at developing double vision?
Looking Above“...and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Looking Below“Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
We need direction and nourishment which comes from above. Are you focused on God? Do you want to go to Heaven more than anything on earth? Does the time you spend studying the scriptures prove you value the Bible (the roadmap to God)? Do you believe hell exists and Satan wants us there? Do you believe he is deceptive and must be watched? Let’s develop double vision for growth and survival!

I’d Rather Have A Friend
A lot of folks I know would choose a million bucks to spend,But if I had to make my choice, I’d rather have a friend.Oh, spending money may be fun and mighty well worth trying, But spending time with someone nice is much more satisfying. Some people think that fame must be life’s greatest dividend,But give me, if I have a choice, a faithful, life-long friend. For fame and money get away, And leave you high and stranded; But once you’ve found a real true friend, You’re never empty handed.
Be Filled With The Spirit
The Bible calls for us to walk according to the Spirit and not after the flesh (Galatians 5:16-25). Those who belong to Christ have crucified or put to death the works of the flesh or some translations say sinful nature. As Christians, those who live spiritual lives ought to keep in step with the Spirit. To keep in step is a military term meaning to hold ranks or to walk in step with an identifiable leader. Christians are to follow the leader and that is Jesus Christ. At times we do sin (Romans 3:23). Years ago Tennessee and Ole Miss were playing each other in football. Tennessee had the football and it had appeared that the Vols had moved early. In fact, at least three guys in orange jerseys moved across the line of scrimmage. Out came a penalty flag and people just knew Tennessee had moved early. But the defense was actually the ones who were penalized. When the flag was picked up, the referee explained that the penalty was against Ole Miss. The defense was penalized five yards for calling false cadence. With the offensive team’s quarterback barking signals, somebody on the defensive line had imitated his voice and fooled at least three men on Tennessee’s team. Sometimes, we jump across the line that separates the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of darkness and we sin. The penalty is against us. When we sin we usually are pulled into the world by listening to false cadence. I encourage us all to walk after the Spirit and not according to the flesh. To live in submission to the Spirit of God and to walk in step with the Spirit’s cadence is not a cowardly lifestyle but a courageous one. God bless us all as we live for the Lord!
Consistency
I love to play golf. I am not the greatest golfer in the world, but I still love to go out and play. To be a great golfer, one needs to play consistently. If I played consistently my score would be very low (that’s good in golf). In our Christian walk, if we are going to be faithful to God on a daily basis, our walk with God must be a consistent one. We can’t be faithful one day and not the next. We cannot be lukewarm and be a Christian. We must be on fire for the Lord daily. Just think of how we could all grow spiritually if we were more consistent. I pray that we all strive to be more and more like our Lord Jesus Christ on a daily basis. Yes we are going to sin (Romans 3:23), we are going to hit the ball in the water or in the sand trap in golf, but if we are faithful to God, we can and will walk the strait and narrow path that leads to life eternally in Heaven (Matthew 7:13-14). Luke 16:13 "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." God bless us all as we strive to be more consistent!
Forrest Gump & St Peter
When Forest Gump died, he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter said, "Welcome, Forest. We've heard a lot about you." He continued, "Unfortunately, it's getting pretty crowded up here and we find that we now have to give people an entrance examination before we let them in." "Okay," said Forest. "I hope it's not too hard. I've already been through a test. My momma used to say, 'Life is like a final exam. It's hard.' " "Yes, Forest, I know. But this test is only three questions. Here they are." 1) Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'?" 2) How many seconds are in a year? 3) What is God's first name? "Well, sir," said Forest, "The first one is easy. Which two days of the week begin with the letter 'T'? Today and Tomorrow." St. Peter looked surprised and said, "Well, that wasn't the answer I was looking for, but you have a point. I give you credit for that answer." "The next question," said Forest, "How many seconds are in a year? Twelve." "Twelve?" said St. Peter, surprised and confused. "Yes, sir. January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd …" St. Peter interrupted him. "I see what you mean. I'll have to give you credit for that one, too." "And the last question," said Forest, "What is God's first name? It's Andy." "Andy?" said St. Peter, in shock. "How did you come up with 'Andy'?" "I learned it in church. We used to sing about it." Forest broke into song, "Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am His own." St. Peter opened the gate to heaven and said, "Run, Forest, Run!"
Temptation
We all face temptations every day of our lives. One thing that is certain for us as Christians is, we will be tempted until the day we die. A friend of mine back in Mississippi once said that the temptation to sin is a “Storm that Is Never-ending.” Even Jesus our Lord faced temptations. We know for sure that He was faced with turning stones into bread, jumping off the top of the temple, and bowing down before Satan (Matthew 4:1-11). Each time Jesus was tempted, He resisted by quoting Scripture. He knew the Word of God. Folks, if we hide the Word of God in our hearts, we too can resist temptations that come our way (Psalm 119:11). Paul tells us that there is a way of escape when temptation comes our way (1 Corinthians 10:13). Let’s get real with temptation! The next time you are tempted, know that with God’s help, you can overcome any trial or temptation that is thrown your way. God bless you and remember, let’s keep our eyes on the prize of Heaven!
Soaring Like Eagles
Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.
The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us - and all of us will experience them - we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God's power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.
The Bible says, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31).

Remember Whose You Are
In our daily walk as a Christian, the most important thing that we must remember is that we belong to someone, we are God’s children. John 1:12 - “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” Because we have done the things necessary to receive God, we are his children. To show that we are his children we must turn away from fleshly things that cause us to sin, or we show that we are not God’s children. Romans 9:8 - “Those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God.” We are told that because of God’s love, we can be called his children. 1 John 3:1 - “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” As Christians, we must do the things God has told us to do, or we will be no different than anybody else. 1 John 5:2 - “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.”
Remember that if you belong to God, you must turn your entire life over to Him. 1 Corinthians 6:20 - “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

7 Up
Wake Up - Decide to have a good day. “Rejoice in the LORD always: and again I say, Rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4)
Dress Up - The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
Button Up - Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking. “He who guards his lips guards his life.” (Proverbs 13:3)
Stand Up - For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything. “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6: 9-10)
Look Up - To the Lord. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
Reach Up - For something higher. As Jiminy Cricket sings “High Hopes,” always try to better yourself. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16)
Lift Up - Your prayers. “be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6)

So True
The other day, someone at a store in a small town read that a methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farm house in the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question. “Why didn’t we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?” Well, I did have a “Drug” problem when I was a kid growing up on the farm. I was “Drug” to church on Sunday morning. I was “Drug” to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather. I was “Drug” by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also “Drug” to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn’t put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was “Drug” to the kitchen sink if I uttered a profane four letter word. I was “Drug” out to pull weeds in mom’s garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad’s fields. I was “Drug” to the homes of family, friends and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one, to mow the yard, repair the clothesline or chop some fire wood, and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, should would have “Drug” me back to the woodshed. Those “Drugs” are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin, and if today’s children had this kind of “Drug problem”, America might be a better place today!! And to that I say a hearty AMEN!!!
Obstacles
I like this quote: "Don’t tell God how big your obstacles are, tell your obstacles how big God is!" Folks, that quote is so true. God knows that we have to face some big obstacles in this life. Our obstacles may come in different forms. Your obstacle may come in the form of a temptation or as a physical trial. When I think about someone in the pages of the Bible who faced a big obstacle I think of David. David was a man who faced a GIANT obstacle (1 Samuel 17). The thing I like about him is that David didn't back down from his big obstacle, he told his obstacle how big God is. Folks, no matter what obstacle you face in this life, you can overcome with the Lord's help. We must put our faith and trust in the Lord and when we do that, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way. I like the King James Version's translation of Proverbs 3:5-6 which says, (Verse 5) "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (Verse 6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Let's learn to trust God with all of our heart and know with God's help we can overcome any obstacle that Satan throws at us.
Jesus the Academic Marvel
In chemistry, He turned water to wine (John 2:1-10)
In biology, He was born without the normal conception (Matthew 1:18-25)
In physics, He overcame the law of gravity by walking on water and ascending into heaven (Matthew 14:25)(Acts 1:9-11)
In economics, He disproved the law of diminishing return by feeding 5000 with two fish and five loaves (John 6:1-11)
In medicine, He cured the sick and the blind without administering a single dose of drugs (Matthew 8:1-34; 15:30)
In government, He is King of kings (1 Timothy 6:15)
In religion, no one comes to the Father except through Him(John 14:6)
JOY
Where does a person find joy? Possibly the best explanation comes from an acrostic using J.O.Y.
The J represents Jesus...T he O signifies zero, or nothing. The Y stands for You... Joy is found when “nothing” comes between “Jesus” and “You.”
True joy is found by having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Joy is not found in things of the world. Do you want to be full of joy? Do you know the Lord? If not, come to know the Lord and you too will have true joy. "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice" (Philippians 4:4).

Do You Live What You Preach?
While speaking to a group of Hindu women, a missionary noticed one of the women silently walked away but soon returned and listened more intently than before. Afterwards, he asked her, “Why did you live in the middle of my message?” The woman replied, “I was so interested in the wonderful things you were saying that I went to ask your servant if you live like you teach and he said that you do. So, I came back to hear more about Jesus.” We as Christians need to discipline ourselves to practice what we preach. We can preach all day how we are to be more Christ-like, but are we living how God desires us to? “... Jesus began both to do and teach” (Acts 1:1)
Commitment
If we are Christians and say that we are following the Lord, then it is something that must be a daily thing. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). If we wear the name of Christ, we must wear it on a daily basis. We definitely can not pick and choose what day we are going to live the Christian life or not. It is a daily walk with God. Daily walking with God includes being in the Word of God and communicating with God in prayer. Jesus said to be faithful till death (Revelation 2:10). Jesus wants us to be faithful to Him not here and there but always. A good friend of mine made a strong point in a lesson once as he said, “If we are to make God part of our life then God can’t be just a part of our life.” He has to be all of our life. Once we give ourselves to Christ in baptism, we are submitting to God and His will for our life and that is something we all should take serious. There is a story that is told of a chicken and a pig that were walking down the side of a highway one day. The chicken looked up and saw a billboard sign which said, “The Great American Breakfast.” Under the title was a picture of a breakfast plate with things like eggs and ham. The chicken said to the pig, “I made a contribution to that.” The pig then said to the chicken, “For you it may have been a contribution, but for me it was total commitment.” Being committed to Jesus means to be dedicated to the Lord! Following Jesus all of our days are about saying “NO” to self and “YES” to Jesus. That means we are controlled by the Spirit not by the flesh. I have been crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh I live by the faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me (Galatians 2:20). Well, what does that mean? That means that we are to submit to God and to surrender to His ways.
